Since their respective marriages are falling apart, they decide to help each other to salvage their marriages, blissfully unaware of what the forces of love have in store for them. A chance encounter brings Dev and Maya together. Rishi is a passionate and affectionate husband but Maya is unable to reciprocate his love because of the lack of feelings towards him. Maya Talwar is a kindergarten teacher married to her childhood buddy Rishi. The “R” rating on IMDb is completely misleading for most audience, and the only exception would be for Indian watchers because there are some non-traditional scenes that are usually untypical in most Bollywood movies.Dev Saran is a disgruntled former footballer who is jealous of his wife Rhea’s successful career as a fashion magazine editor. Maya is a kindergarten teacher who is married Dev Saran. But overall, I still enjoyed it and I learned something new. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) Plot Showing all 5 items Jump to: Summaries (5) Summaries Dev, a former football player is married to Rhea, a successful fashion editor. It is not a complete waste of time, as some may think, but I wouldn’t say it is one of the better movies from Bollyhood. I personally think it is not just an ordinary drama movie.
And I might still tell some people to watch it if they are up for some 3 hour long drama, which at least lasts shorter than the usual TV series soap opera, and are up for discussion about what the directors and writers want to say. This is not really a movie I would recommend, but I give it a higher score than IMDb’s mostly because of the subtle message it seems to be telling. And I feel that this movie suggests it, which makes the ending seem quite open-ended.
And it is a known fact that some relationships start to fall only when the lovers have settled down to live together…married or not. That is probably why Rhea (maybe with a joking tone) would say something like, “You think this is the punishment? No, the punishment starts when you start living with him,” (according to my subtitles).Īnd throughout the movie, Dev and Maya had never tried living together… there is truth in what Rhea is suggesting and perhaps foreshadowing. But slowly, this turns into an illusory love (and what do you know, the name Maya might be an allegory since it means “illusion” in hindi!) They think they have fallen for each other because they understand each other, but from my point of view, they only seemed to be complaining about the same things, not understanding each other per se.
They do not know how to get out of what they think is their straitjacket, but they find happiness in complaining to each other about their situations, finding ways to solve them or to again compromise with what they have. One doesn’t know how to love at all and is hence caged in this non-love, and the other lives in the shadows of a successful woman because his had ended all too abruptly. It’s human and understandable given their stagnating circumstances. It is clearly shown that the two main characters Dev and Maya are there to be friends in order to lick their respective wounds. It really felt that the hints of an underlying premise was being drawn out, maybe even without the director or writers wanting it to. But with some thought and discussion, I can conclude that there seems to be a message told, but I felt that it wasn’t told intentionally. So it did not occur to me at first that this was a strangely woven but predictable movie.
I guess since I do not usually watch complicated love dramas, I felt that it was still quite a good movie because it kept you interested about what’s going to happen next (basically, I’m not as familiar as I thought with predicting the next move to this genre of media). This is one of those dramatic multidimensional romance movies that could have been a soap opera TV series (not necessarily in a bad way). They part, and as they part, they enter into another reality which they have never imagined before.
We start with a person who is about to enter the area of success, and another who is about to enter the uncertainty-ness of a compromising marriage. Two people find love through the incompleteness of their respective broken marriages.
